Oct 13 - Guest Lecture: "Kafka the Prophet?"

On Friday, October 13 2017, Bard College Berlin will welcome Prof. Jason Frydman (CUNY-Brooklyn) for the guest lecture "Kafka the Prophet? African Slavery and the Shoah," followed by a discussion with the audience.

Jason Frydman is Associate Professor of English at Brooklyn College and former director of the Caribbean Studies interdisciplinary program. He is currently working on two new projects. The first considers the ways holocaust consciousness recapitulates yet represses histories, memories, and discourses of transatlantic slavery. The second project addresses how reggae music shapes the Cold War turn in Caribbean cultural production. Prof. Frydman has recent articles on narco-culture in the circum-Caribbean as well as Muslim slave narratives in the Americas. He has written one book, Sounding the Break: African American and Caribbean Routes of World Literature (Virginia, 2014), and published articles on Junot Díaz, Patricia Powell, Zora Neale Hurston, Maryse Condé, Juan Gelman, and Sandra Cisneros.

Time: Friday, October 13 from 12.30pm to 1.30pm
Venue: The Cafeteria (Waldstr. 70), Seminar Room upstairs
