Feb 12: Liberal Arts Education Panel

"Why, and how, shall we read core texts today?" Continuing recent debates, both at the college and beyond, this panel combines three short presentations on different texts / artworks to illuminate three related challenges to liberal education.

Ewa Atanassow and David Kretz will turn to Aristophanes' Clouds to ask what a liberal education can do for democracies today. David Hayes will draw on his experience of teaching religious works, such as Hesiod's Works and Days and The Gospel of John, to examine the notion of critical thinking and its place in a liberal education. Geoff Lehman will present a reading of Bruegel's Via Crucis as commentary on the possibility of interpretation and teaching. Coming from complementary angles, all three talks seek to articulate alternatives to the twin dangers of dogmatism and relativism on a political, pedagogical, and epistemological level. Michael Weinman will offer a response before we open the floor for discussion.
